Photograph by Gary McCullough.2017 started with a bang for the defending ABA National Champion Jacksonville Giants. The Giants started fast and furious in a decisive 134-105 win over the Daytona Beach Sharks. For a majority of the game, Jacksonville kept a double-digit lead over Daytona Beach.

Jermaine Bell also contributed with a season-high 17 points. Bells early scoring extended the Giants lead to 43-26 at the conclusion of the first quarter. The former 2014 ABA MVP also contributed strong on the boards with a season and team-high 15 rebounds.

Jacksonville had a comfortable 74-50  halftime lead but continued to produce a strong offense output for the remainder of the game. The Giants outscored Daytona 33-20 in the third quarter thanks to some impressive outside shooting from guards Ed Horton and 2016 All-ABA Maurice Mickens. Both Horton and Mickens combined for 26 points in the contest.

Defensively Jacksonville remained strong with aggressive play from Elijah Smith and team captain Jerrod Tucker. The tenacious defensive play kept Daytona pressured throughout the game, ending any chance of a comeback. Dontay Sheppard and Sherrod Harris both had 15 points each for Daytona.

Jacksonville will be back in action on Sunday in another matchup with Daytona Beach. Tipoff is at 2 pm.

The Jacksonville Giants winning streak continues, as the defending ABA National Champions dominated the Columbus Blackhawks in a 140-84 road victory on Saturday evening. Jacksonville has won three games in a row, improving their record to 5-2 on the season.

“The guys came out and held the rope on defense tonight, despite the horrible gym conditions,” said Giants Head Coach Jerry Williams. “We are very pleased with the team’s effort.”

The Giants came out of the gates swinging, as eight Jacksonville players scored in double figures. Captain Jerrod Tucker led Jacksonville with a team-high 25 points. Tucker’s well-rounded approach helped keep the Giants in complete control of the contest.

“Everything came together for us on both ends of the floor,” said Tucker. “It was a great team win.”

Offensively 2014 ABA MVPJermaine Bell and Giants newcomer Keith McDougald added to the scoring with 17 points each. Both players also assisted defensively.

Horton helped lead Jacksonville early in the game, as the ABA veteran scored 11 first quarter points. Surprisingly, Mickens and Nugent were both held in check the first quarter, but eventually got things going later in the game. Mickens scored 14-second quarter points with Nugent adding nine.

Jacksonville continued to pull away from Atlanta in the second half. The guard combinations were too much for the Wildcats. Jermaine Bell and Cedric McGowan also assisted in the scoring frenzy, as both players scored 13 points each. Defensively both Nugent and Bell were the standout players.

“We came out with a tough win because of our ability to sustain toughness,” said Giants head coach Jerry Williams.

Nugent also assisted the team on the defensive side of the ball with multiple steals throughout the game. Robert Hornsby rounded out the top scorers for the Giants with 16 points.

“It was a tough game,” said Williams. “The referees were very inconsistent with calls on both sides.”

Early in the contest, the Giants were challenged by a tough Gold team. Both Sims and Wilson gave the Giants issues on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Sims scored 19 points with Wilson scoring 18 points.

“South Florida is a solid team,” said Giants assistant coach Marcus Thomas. “We played ok but not well enough to be satisfied.”

Smith scored 14 points on the evening while Bell connected for 15 points. Guards Ed Horton and Maurice Mickens scored 12 points each, while captain Jerrod Tucker added 13 points.

Both teams played very competitively in the first quarter. The Giants started strong with great inside play from game MVP Bruce Brown and 2014 ABA MVP Jermaine Bell. Both Bell and Brown got things going early for Jacksonville landing crucial shots while helping in the rebounding department. Baltimore, however, played tough and kept the deficit at 27-20 to conclude the first quarter. Baltimore stayed competitive with great shooting from Nardie Bogus and Steve McCray. The Jacksonville Giants won their tenth straight game in a 133-111 route over the Jackson Showboats. Jacksonville has improved to 12-2 on the season and holds a #8 ranking in the latest ABA Power Rankings. The victory was witnessed by a crowd of local students for school field trip day held at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena.

The young fans in attendance were cheerful throughout the game and helped encourage the inspired Giants team. Throughout the first half, the students witnessed long range three pointers, striking slam dunks, and an intruding defense that put the Giants in a decisive 65-48 halftime lead.

“As an organization, we feel that it’s very important to give back to our community and allow our local students to witness a great basketball game while enjoying the game day experience,” said Giants General Manager Pam Masters.

The young students also were able to partake in an autograph session with the Giants players, mascots, and coaches. School staff members also got involved when two local Duval County school teachers made half court baskets to win $500. The first teacher made it on the first try, so the Giants organization opened it up to let another teacher attempt a basket.

“It was a great time for the entire Giants community,” said Giants head coach Jerry Williams.

The excitement continued throughout the second half as the Giants continued to extend their lead over Jackson. Former Georgetown player Aaron Bowen and team veteran Ed Horton led the Giants with 17 points each.

Jacksonville had eight players score in double digits. Larry Dumas(16 points), Jermaine Bell (15 points), and Clarence Tillman (15) rounded out the top scorers. Bell had 16 rebounds, which gave him a double-double.

Two Half Court Shots – $500 EACH! – WINNERS!!

It is only so often that we get contestants that make the half court shot. Until today, never have contestants made the shot at the Jacksonville Memorial Arena and let alone two contestants in a row!

Kevin, a teach from Seabreeze Elementary, poses with Josh and Mr. Biggs after sinking a half-court shot at the 2/13/17 Giants game versus the Showboats.

Our first winner is Kevin from Seabreeze Elementary, in the green shirt unbelievably made the first shot. Most of the Giants crew were caught unaware! The camera for our Facebook live stream barely caught it.

Kevin’s students and others from the same school went berserk.

Miss Pamela Masters approved a second go-around for the half-court shot contest since it ended so quick! With another $500 up for grabs, the other 11 contestants have at least a chance.

The very next contestant, Tom a chaperone, approaches the half-court line with familiar confidence, hits the backboard, and just as unbelievably as the first, hits a second half-court shot!

For the second time, Giants players and fans alike shouted and cheered the contestants for their luck, skill, and the fact that they each won $500.

Tom, a teaching chaperone, was the second winner of the half-court shot contest at the 2/11/17 Giants game versus the Showboats.

What an amazing and rare experience!

Half-court shot winners, Kevin and Tom, pose with General Manager Miss Pam, Jewel, and Gem.

Sundays game featured stellar inside play from Center Jermaine Bell and Power Forward Elijah Smith. Bell, the 2014 ABA MVP, had a double-double. Bell’s 35 points and 27 rebounds (21 defensive boards) led the team in both categories.  While Bell was dominating the defensive boards and limiting the Sharks second chance scoring, Smith, a 2016 All ABA selection, also had a double-double with 26 points and 11 rebounds, 10 of those rebounds coming on the offensive side, providing second chance scoring opportunities for the Giants.

Daytona Beach was competitive early in the game, as the Sharks only trailed Jacksonville 60-48 at halftime.  However, the Giants outscored the Sharks 43-22 in the third quarter to regain momentum.  Bell and Smith were tough on the inside, but the outside shooting started to produce more points, as the second half turned into a scoring frenzy for the Giants.  Guards Ed Horton and Larry Dumas rounded out the top scorers for the Giants, Horton with 22 and Dumas adding 20, each with 4 three-pointers in the game.

Jacksonville scored 89 points in the second half to take full control of the game, keeping it out of reach for Daytona.  The outside shooting continued to be successful.  Jacksonville was 16 of 38 from three-point range in the game.

The Giants have four regular season games remaining until the post-season. The recent success should move the Giants up in the upcoming and highly anticipated ABA Power Rankings, which are scheduled to be released early this week.

GIANTS TAME THE TIDE WITH 18TH STRAIGHT WIN AND REMAIN UNBEATEN IN 2017

The defending ABA National Champion Jacksonville Giants cruised past the St. Petersburg Tide, 129-107.  Jacksonville improves to 20-2 and has won 18 straight games, which has moved them to a number three ranking in the latest ABA Power Poll.

“The guys played a great game tonight,” said Giants head coach Jerry Williams.  “I’m very proud of the team chemistry.  Each game is getting us playoff ready and the guys are feeding off each others energy and the support of our fans”

With the victory, the Giants are one win away from clinching the Southeast Division Championship for the sixth time in seven years. Last year, the Giants five year run as division champs was ended by the Miami Midnights, however the Giants went on to win the ABA National Championship.  If the Giants win the division they will clinch a first round bye in the playoffs.

The ABA Championship Series begins on March 29th in Baltimore. The postseason tournament will feature the top surviving eight teams, following three weeks of play-in rounds.  More playoff details will be released in the upcoming week.

Offensively the Giants were led by Jermaine Bell.  Bell had another double-double as the 2014 ABA MVP scored a game high 23 points with 12 rebounds.  Bernard Nugent (22 points) and Jerrod Tucker (19 points) rounded out the top scorers for Jacksonville.

The Giants opened the game with a 70-43 halftime lead.  The fast paced offensive tempo was too much for St. Petersburg. Jacksonville shot 52 percent, while the Tide shot only 36 percent in the first half. Point guard Maurice Mickens had a game high 13 assists while Nugent added three steals.

GIANTS ROLL THE TIDE

GIANTS ROLL THE TIDE TO CLAIM THEIR SIXTH SOUTHEAST DIVISION TITLE AND ARE HEADED TO BALTIMORE AND THE ABA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP PLAYOFFS

The third ranked Jacksonville Giants dominated the St. Petersburg Tide 130-77 to win the American Basketball Association (ABA) Southeast Division Title.

Jacksonville has won the ABA Southeast Division six out of the last seven years. The Giants will be heading to Baltimore to compete with the leagues best in their chase for a fourth national title. Winning the division gives the Giants an early round bye in the ABA playoffs.

“We are excited to have the division title back in Jacksonville,” said Giants head coach Jerry Williams. “The team’s hard work is paying off.”

The win also gives the Giants a season record of 21-2 and 19 straight wins, currently the longest winning streak of the season for the ABA. The Giants are determined to bring home another National Championship to the city of Jacksonville.

“We are staying focused on the playoffs. Our goal from the beginning of the season has been bringing the championship back to Jacksonville and to the greatest fans in the league,” said Williams. “We have been taking it one game at a time. The Southeast Division Title is a big step towards our goal”, Williams continued.

The Tide stayed competitive with Jacksonville in the early goings of the contest. C.J. Bargman and Aaron Jennings helped St. Petersburg to an early 23-20 first quarter lead. Bargman (23 points) and Jennings (22 points) were the leading scorers for the Tide.

The early deficit didn’t phase the Giants as the defending ABA Champions went on a 39-18 second quarter run to take a commanding 59-41 halftime lead. Maurice Mickens scored 12 second quarter points, leading the attack.

The Giants continued to use an overbearing offense to push their lead to over 30 points in the third quarter. The guard play was once again a major factor in the scoring frenzy. Mickens finished the game with 24 points with fellow guard Larry Dumas putting up 26 points (to lead all scorers) and Bernard Nugent adding 16. Dumas also had 12 rebounds giving him a double-double for the game.

The inside defensive play was also superb in the weekend series. The combination of team captain Jerrod Tucker, Elijah Smith, and Jermaine Bell shut down the Tide’s inside scoring.

“We are very excited about the playoffs,” said Tucker. “The guys have been working very hard and I’m proud of them. The team chemistry has continued to improve throughout the season and is driving us toward Baltimore to bring the championship back to Jacksonville”, the captain continued.

ABA League headquarters will be releasing more playoff information as the remaining teams are determined in the next couple of weeks. Keep up to date with the Giants and the ABA 2017 Final Eight by visiting www.jacksonvillegiants.com and liking us on Facebook.

A GIANT Comeback! Giants Rally in Fourth Quarter to Secure ABA Final Four Bid

A GIANT Comeback! Giants Rally in Fourth Quarter to Secure ABA Final Four Bid

With the season on the line, the defending ABA National Champion Jacksonville Giants prevailed in a breathtaking 139-137 win, over the Baltimore Hawks, in the ABA Elite 8 Tournament held in Baltimore, Maryland. The Giants trailed by 18 points at one point and by 17 at the end of the third quarter.   The victory advances the Giants to their seventh straight ABA Final Four.
Trailing 137-136 with 1:05 left in the game, Giants’ guard Larry Dumas landed a three-pointer to give the Giants a 139-137 lead. Baltimore had a late opportunity to regain the lead, but
Giants forward Calvin Warner had two critical block shots in the final ten seconds to secure the comeback victory.

“Securing a seventh straight Final Four appearance is a great accomplishment, but we still have work to do,” said Giants’ Head Coach Jerry Williams.

Throughout the contest, it was all Baltimore. The Hawks came out very physical and played strong against the veteran Giants. Nardie Bogues had 50 points for the Hawks and was landing long range shots all evening. Baltimore led most of the game and even had a 112-95 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Jacksonville used a full-court press to create several turnovers early in the fourth quarter, resulting in two 3D baskets and 10-0 run to open the final period.

The Giants were led offensively by point guard Maurice Mickens and captain Jerrod Tucker.  Mickens was named the player of the game by Sports Radio America. Mickens had 36 points, with most coming in the second half as the ABA All-Star was held to only nine points in the first half. Mickens 27 second half points provided the spark for the Giants offense. Tucker finished the night with 29 points. Calvin Warner rounded out the top Giants scorers with 17 points.

“Tonight’s game was a true testament of how good of a league the ABA is,” added Williams. “If you want to win the championship you have to win games like this one,” said Giants’ Mickens.”

“Our hats are off to the home team Hawks that were near invincible shooting the ball, tonight.  But the Giants played like defending Champions in the fourth quarter,” said Giants owner, Ron Sholes, about the team’s 4th quarter comeback.

The Giants will now play on Saturday in a final four match up against an opponent to be determined after Friday night’s game.  If the Giants win Saturday they will play for their fourth ABA Championship on Sunday.

GIANTS TAME THE TORNADOS AND ADVANCE TO THE TITLE GAME.

GIANTS TAME THE TORNADOS AND ADVANCE TO THE TITLE GAME.

The #2 seed Jacksonville Giants defeated the #5 seed Mobile Bay Tornados 109-107 in the Final Four match-up in Baltimore Maryland. The victory puts Jacksonville in their fifth championship matchup in just seven years of play in the American Basketball Association (ABA). The championship game will feature a rematch of the 2016 ABA Championship as Chicago’s #6 seed Windy City Groove upset the undefeated and #1 ranked DMV Warriors in an overtime thriller before the Giants and Tornados took the court.

Much like the Giants first game in the tournament, they found themselves having to come from behind in the second half.  After going into the locker room trailing by four at the half, 51-47, the Giants woes continued to start the second half. Trailing 58-49 midway through the third quarter, the Giants seemed frustrated by a physical Tornados team. However Giants’ Head Coach Jerry Williams once again called on the Giants’ full court press defense to bail the team out.  The press sparked an 18-4 run late in the third quarter and the Giants took an eight point lead heading into the final period.

Giants’ Power Forward, Calvin Warner, had 11 third quarter points, including a 3D possession layup. Guard Larry Dumas also landed back to back three pointers and had another 3D layup in the third quarter. Giants’ forwad Robert Hornsby led the scoring with 18 points on the night. All of his points came in the second half and three of his field goals were on 3D possessions. Mickens (17 points), Tucker (16 points), Bell (15 points), and Dumas (14 points) rounded out the top scorers for Jacksonville.

The Giants continued pressing in the fourth quarter and caused several turnovers resulting in another run which pushed their lead to as many as 15 midway through the fourth quarter.  However, the Tornado’s wouldn’t give up. Late in the quarter, the Tornado’s went on an 8-0 run with quick scoring from Anthony Sims. The Giants held a 108-105 lead with less then 30 seconds left in the game. Mobile Bay made it a 108-107 game with 29 seconds on the clock.

Giants’ guard Maurice Mickens held the ball for the duration of the shot clock and attempted a runner in the lane with just 5 seconds remaining in the game. The shot hit the backboard and it was unclear whether it hit the side of the rim or not, but the referees did not call a shotclock violation.   Giants’ Calvin Warner rebounded and with just one second remaining Mickens was fouled.  Mickens made the first shot, but missed the second and the Tornado’s attempted a hail mary that went wide right of the basket.

“They (Mobile Bay) outplayed us in first half,” said Giants’ Head Coach Jerry Williams. “We just needed to settle down and play Giants basketball. We knew they were gonna come out hard, its the Final Four.”

“We played as a team and we stayed focused,” said Nugent, who was named the Sports Radio America Player of the Game. “We want nothing more than to bring another Championship back to Jacksonville.”

“Windy City is a scrappy team,” said Williams. “They will give us everything they have. I have so much respect for those guys.”

Jacksonville will take on Windy City Sunday afternoon at 4:30PM Eastern Time in Baltimore.

Giants Continue Undefeated Season, Sweep Pensacola

-Matt Potak

The defending ABA National Champions remained undefeated with a commanding 133-84 win over the Pensacola Lightning. The victory puts Jacksonville at 6-0 for the season and gives the team its 28th consecutive win, dating back to December 17, 2016. The Giants outscored the lightning 271-164 in the weekend series.

“We started way to slow in the first half,” said Giants head coach Jerry Williams. “It seemed like we were sleepwalking but in the second half we woke back up.”

The Giants, despite winning the game by nearly 50 points, remained humble in victory and will look to improve for the home opener on Friday night vs Mobile Bay. Jacksonville had only a slim halftime advantage against a scrappy Lightning team.

“We still have a lot to fix,” said point guard and 2016-17 ABA MVP Maurice Mickens.

The Giants had another breathtaking offensive night from newcomer Dylon Cromier. Cromier scored a team high 28 points in today’s win and concluded the weekend series with a combined 60 points.

“We have to play better as a unit,” said Cromier, referring to the teams slow first half start.

The Giants exploded in be second half, scoring 92 points. Cromier and Mickens energized the offense. Mickens scored 17 third quarter points and ended the game with 24 points. Cromier and Mickens each had four successful three pointers in the game. Tim Anderson (19 points) and Aaron Bowen (15 points) rounded out the top scorers for the Giants.

“We still have a lot to fix despite another 50 point win,” said assistant coach Marcus Thomas.

At one point in the second half the Giants had five 3D possessions in a row. The entire team came together in all phases of the game to shut down the Lightning. The physical defensive  play from Jermaine Bell and Bernard Nugent kept Pensacola tentative offensively. Jacksonville continued a rapid press defense, which forced multiple Pensacola turnovers.

“The entire team came together in the second half and put together a defensive performance like no other,” said Williams.

The Giants will now turn their attention to the Mobile Bay Tornadoes in Friday nights home opener at the Veterans Memorial Arena. Last season Jacksonville defeated Mobile Bay in a thrilling 109-107 come from behind win in the ABA Final Four game played in Baltimore. The game ended the Tornadoes 2016-17 season. Tipoff for Friday nights game is slated for 7:00pm. For ticket information please check the Giants website at www.jacksonvillegiants.com

Jacksonville,  FL – The four-time defending ABA National Champion Jacksonville Giants had another thrilling opening night on Saturday, December 15, 2017, as they celebrated their most recent championship and paid tribute to one of their own.  The Giants powered through the Alabama based Mobile Bay Tornadoes, 138-98, in front of a large home crowd at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena. The victory puts Jacksonville at 7-0 for the season and gives them their 29th straight win, dating back to December of 2016.

“It was a very emotional win,” said Giants head coach Jerry Williams. “We played inspired all game.”

Before the game the Giants held a ring ceremony to celebrate the team’s 2016-17 ABA National Championship season.  The pre-game ceremony also paid tribute to Giants Vice President of Operations Joe Miller.  Miller passed away unexpectedly in the offseason.  Before the game the team showed a video in remembrance of Miller and team Owner Ron Sholes presented the championship ring to Miller’s family.

“We love Joe Miller and may he Rest In Peace,” said Giants’ point guard Bernard Nugent.

The Giants started the contest in energetic fashion as the team jumped out to an overpowering 39-13 first quarter lead.  The veteran guard duo of Ed Horton and Maurice Mickens combined for 20 points in the opening quarter, putting the Giants in a commanding lead.  Calvin Warner also contributed with strong inside play.  Warner led the Giants with 27 points, with Aaron Bowen (23 points), Larry Dumas (14 points), and Horton (14 points) rounding out the scoring leaders.  Seven Jacksonville players scored double digits in the game.

“I’m very proud of the guys,” said Williams.

“We practice hard and play as a team,” said Warner, who was named the game MVP.

Jacksonville kept playing flawless for the remainder of the game with all players contributing in the win.  Cormier, Bowen, Warner, and newcomer Tim Amerson each had electrifying slam dunks to close out the game.  The Giants were also successful from beyond the 3-point line hitting on 14 three pointers in the game.

“We played tough,” said Warner.

Prior to the game, Giants’ fans started the fun at the pre-game party held at the front of the arena with bounce houses by Jumperama of St. Augustine, DJ Jay Mowton, Pizza Hut, and facepainting.

The Giants return to the Arena on Monday morning in front of some of their youngest fans for a 10:00 a.m. game against the Mississippi based Jackson Showboats.  This marks the Giants’ 2nd annual School Field Trip game.  Last year one teacher and one chaperone connected on back to back half-court shots that earned them $500 each.

Giants Get Revenge in Rematch Win Over Orlando

Jacksonville, FL – The Jacksonville Giants, in front of a large crowd at the Jacksonville Memorial Arena, won their ninth straight game, of the season, in a 127-94 route of the Orlando Waves. The Giants improve to 17-1 on the season and are 39-1 dating back to December 2016.

After losing in January to the Wave, the focus was strong heading into the rematch game with Orlando. Head coach Jerry Williams was very motivated to get his team on the court to redeem the early season loss.

“This is the biggest game of the season,” said Williams during pregame. “This is a very important game in order for us to win the division. We made a lot of mistakes the last time we played Orlando and we will not make them tonight.”

Coach Williams was correct. The Giants played fast and physical in the lopsided win. Jacksonville had seven players score in double figures and had 18 total team steals. Offensively, the Giants were led by ABA MVP Maurice Mickens. Mickens scored 27 points in the win and was named the player of the game. Mickens did major damage to the Waves defense, especially with his outside shooting as the point guard converted successfully on four-three point baskets. Jermaine Bell (16 points), Aaron Bowen (15 points), and Jeremiah Hill (15 points) rounded out the top scorers for the Giants.

“We played good,” said Mickens. “I’m proud of my team.”

Defensively, the Giants played at an aggressive pace, applying pressure to the waves all evening. Orlando had a very difficult time getting shots off. Hill, Bernard Nugent, and Dylon Cormier all played major roles in the defensive game plan. Nugent led the team with four steals while Cormier and Hill each had three steals each. Robert Hornsby had a double-double with 10 rebounds and 10 points.

“This week in practice the focus was defense,” said Williams.

Added Mickens, “After watching film from the first Orlando game we were a little hesitant and played their game. We had to play our game.”

Despite the win, some bad news happened during the game. Midway though the first quarter team captain Jerrod Tucker suffered a season ending achilles injury. Nugent and Rashad Faust also left the game with injuries.

“At halftime I threw the stat sheet on the ground and said that we have to win for Jerrod,” said Williams. “We had several other players that left the game with injuries and we are hoping that they heal up for the playoffs.”

Other newcomers were able to step in and emerge in position roles. Bowen, Cormier and Hill all assisted Mickens at the guard position, providing strong play. Hill landed three- three pointers with Bowen providing strong play inside. Cormier had 14 points and helped direct the offense a majority of the second half.

“This is professional basketball and everyone will step up,” said Mickens. “It’s the next man up.”

The Giants travel to St. Augustine on Wednesday night. A win on Wednesday will clinch the Division championship for the Giants.

The Giants will be back at the Veterans Memorial Arena on Saturday, March 3rd, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. against the South Florida Gold.  For more ticket information go to www.jacksonvillegiants.com or call 904-355-6531.

“It was very close and the decision was based on the strength of schedule,” stated ABA co-founder Joe Newman. “It could have gone either way; we’ll find out at the ABA Final Eight in Austin, TX as both teams have received byes to the Final Eight.”

This weekend the #1 Giants will take on rival and #7 ranked South Florida Gold at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena. Tip off is slated for 7:30pm. The South Florida Gold (18-3) are looking to ruin Jacksonville’s final regular season game and move themselves up in the rankings. It’s also a strong possibility that the Gold and Giants could meet again in the ABA Tournament in Austin, Texas. Last season the Giants eliminated South Florida at the ABA tournament in Baltimore.

Back in December the Giants defeated the Gold in a thrilling 120-105 win. At that time the Gold was ranked #1 in the power rankings. Following the game head coach Jerry Williams spoke about how the game was a complete team win.

“The score isn’t a true indication of the game,” said Giants coach Jerry Williams following the win. “It was a team effort and we came together at the right time to seal the deal.”

The Giants will need to duplicate their success vs South Florida with continued strong play from veteran point guard Maurice Mickens. Mickens, the reigning ABA MVP, scored a game high 29 points in the December meeting with the Gold. Newcomer Dylon Cormier (22 points) and Rashad Faust (14 points) rounded out the scoring leaders for the Giants

“These are the type of games we need to win to become a better team,” said Mickens.

The Giants will be at the Veterans Memorial Arena this Saturday, March 3rd, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. against the South Florida Gold.  For more ticket information go towww.jacksonvillegiants.com or call 904-355-6531.

Giants Swat Yellow Jackets in Final 8 Playoff Showdown

Austin, TX – The reigning ABA National Champion Jacksonville Giants will make another return to the ABA Final 4. The Giants, following a strong second half showing, routed Pittsburg’s Steel City Yellow Jackets, 125-103, on Wednesday night in Austin, Texas.

“After a sloppy first half of basketball we picked it up the first six minutes of the second half,” said Giants head coach Jerry Williams. “I’m very pleased with our overall effort with this being our first game in over a month.”

The Giants will face the winner of tomorrows game between the, Maryland based, DMV Warriors and the San Diego Kings. Jacksonville is looking to become the first ABA franchise to win three consecutive ABA National Championships. The Giants, as a franchise, have won four total Championships.

“It was a great hard fought game,” said assistant coach Marcus Thomas. “We responded well to adversity. Its a great way to start a playoff run.”

The Giants were in a slugfest with a gritty Yellow Jacket team. Both teams were tied 30-30 heading into the second quarter and the Giants only had a slim 58-52 halftime lead. A Giant Return – Jacksonville Returns to ABA Finals with 111-102 win over the DMV Warriors

Austin, TX – The four time defending ABA National Champion Jacksonville Giants have advanced to the ABA Championship game following a thrilling 111-102 win over the Maryland based DMV Warriors. The Giants will play the winner of the Austin Bats vs South Florida Gold game in the finals. The championship game will take place Saturday at 7:00 p.m., central time, in Austin, Texas.

“The guys played their best basketball of the season in the first three quarters and, like champions, weathered the storm late in the game,” said head coach Jerry Williams.

Jacksonville led a majority of the game, but did face a late comeback attempt from DMV. The Giants led 88-65 going into the fourth quarter. However, the Warriors went on a scoring frenzy, going on a 15-1 run which cut the deficit to 96-88 with 5:16 remaining in the game. The Giants were able to make adjustments and finish the game in championship fashion.

“Anything worth having is tough,” said assistant coach Marcus Thomas. “We pulled away early but DMV played hard. Third straight championship game.”

Jacksonville was led by strong guard play from reigning ABA MVP Maurice Mickens and Bernard Nugent. Both Mickens and Nugent scored 21 points each, accounting for nearly 40 percent of the Giants total points. Jeremiah Hill (17 points) and Delwan Graham (14 points) rounded out the top scorers for Jacksonville. Graham was instrumental coming off the bench both offensively and defensively.

“We are one game away from our goal,” said Nugent.

The Giants jumped out to an early lead and eventually led by as much as 25 points over DMV. Most of the first half the Giants held a strong double digit lead by completely dominating the boards and outside shooting game. Robert Hornsby sunk back to back three pointers Calvin Warner converted on two crowd pleasing slam dunks.

“It was a great team win,” said Giants veteran center Jermaine Bell. “We are bringing our fifth championship back to Duval. Everyone tune in to watch us make history tomorrow night.”

The Giants are looking to win their fifth ABA Championship in the history of the franchise. Jacksonville will also be the first team in ABA history to win three straight ABA Championships.

Giants Win Third Straight ABA Championship, Fifth in Franchise History

Austin, TX – The dynasty continues for the five time ABA Champion Jacksonville Giants. The Giants, in front of a tough Texas crowd, defeated the Austin Bats, 119-114, to win their third straight ABA Championship. The Giants have made ABA history as being the only team to win three consecutive ABA titles and are the only ABA organization to win five championships. Its safe to say that the city of Jacksonville is “Title Town USA” for the American Basketball Association. Jacksonville ends the season at 22-1.

“The three peat is alive!” said an excited Giants head coach Jerry Williams. “I’m extremely proud of my guys. They came together and finished our goal. Five championships for the organization is beautiful.”

The season started with great promise as the Giants returned a majority of players from the 2016-17 team. The Giants started the season with an impressive 8-0 record, which included 30 straight wins dating back to December 2016. Jacksonville suffered a close 103-99 loss to the Orlando Waves in early January. However, the Giants bounced back winning all their remaining games  and dominating Orlando in a February rematch, 127-94.

“Great win!” said assistant coach Marcus Thomas. “Proud of the guys for finishing out the season. Great group of guys and finishing the goal was what we wanted to do.”

The Championship game was Jacksonville’s biggest test for the season. The Giants would advance to the ABA Finals game with their opponent being the local Austin Bats team. The Bats, like the Giants, had only one loss this season and would look to benefit from the home court advantage as this seasons ABA Championship tournament was held in Austin, Texas. However, the Giants used their championship attitude to outplay the aggressive Bats team and win their third straight championship.

“We did it for Duval,” said guard Bernard Nugent. Nugent was named ABA Finals MVP. “We are glad to win this championship.”

The Bats jumped out to an early 19-13 first quarter lead, but the speedy play of Jacksonville helped the Giants regain the lead late in the first. Former ABA MVP Jeremiah Hill converted on an explosive slam dunk at the end of the quarter to give his team a 33-28 lead. Bell ended the game with 10 points on the night. Calvin Warner also provided strong inside play with 15 points in the game. Jeremiah Hill came off the bench to add nine points.

The second quarter was thrilling for both fan bases as both team competed back and forth. Offensively the tempo was rapid for both teams with the Giants hanging on to a slim 61-58 halftime lead. Similar to the Final Four game, Jacksonville regained their composure and went into the fourth and final quarter with a superior 94-79 lead. The guard play was once again the difference throughout the game for Jacksonville. Reigning ABA MVP and point guard Maurice Mickens scored 35 points on the night, with shooting guard Nugent adding 25 points. The duo contributed for just over 50 percent of the teams total points on the evening.

Despite the lead, Austin didn’t back down. The Bats went on a scoring rally of their own, cutting the Giant lead to 107-104 midway through the fourth quarter. Dee Grismore was the leading scorer for the Bats with 20 points.  At this moment the Giants looked to Mickens to make a play and the ABA All Star did just that. Mickens landed four straight three-point baskets, which extended the Giants lead and ultimately helped seal the win and third straight Championship.

“We did what champions do which is finish on top,” said Warner. “No matter how it looked we prevailed in the end.”

Giants Detour Flight in Dominant Opening Night Win

The defending ABA Champions attacked the 2018-19 season with passion in a 162-104 route of the North Carolina based Fayetteville Flight. The Giants were led by ABA veteran and MVP Maurice Mickens. Mickens scored a game high 38 points in the victory. Jacksonville dominated the game from start to finish in the 58 point win. The Giants used an aggressive offensive game plan that resulted in eight players scoring in double digits.

“We learned a lot about the pieces to the puzzle tonight,” said Giants head coach Jerry Williams. “The veterans showed a strong start for three solid quarters. I’m very impressed with the group.”

The veterans on the team continued to shine for Jacksonville. Mickens, Jerrod Tucker (10 points), Calvin Warner (12 points), and Bernard Nugent (12 points) all contributed in the lopsided victory. A majority of the Jacksonville starters only played three quarters. The strong offensive play from the veterans helped inspire the newer Giants players.

“Mickens, Nugent and Warner were very impressive tonight,” said Williams. “Aaron Bowen and Juandrico Walker led the younger guys.”

Williams was referring to the fast tempo offensive strategy used by the team. The tempo wore down the Fayetteville defense and led to impressive scoring plays by the Giants. On offense  Fayetteville couldn’t keep up with the Giants aggressive man to man defensive presence.

“It was a great win,” said Warner. “It was a great way to start the journey back to the top.”

Several of the younger Giant players  contributed in the win. Bowen, a three year Giant player was flawless. Bowen, a former Georgetown star,  scored 25 points. Walker had a double-double with 18 points and a game high 27 rebounds. Newcomer Brent Williams added 18 points and also played strong on the boards.

“We started another season of playing Giants basketball,” said Tucker, who missed a majority of the 2017-18 season with an injury. “A lot of work ahead but I’m looking forward to the grind.”

Giants Gamebox Highlights

Star of the Game: Veteran Point guard Maurice Mickens. Mickens led the team with 38 points and seven three pointers. The reigning ABA MVP has yet to slow down during his powerful playing career.

Turning Point: Aaron Bowen’s 13 first half points combined with Mickens 15 third quarter points proved to be enough for the struggling Fayetteville team. The large deficit was too much for the Flight to overcome.

On Defense: Veterans Tucker, Nugent and Warner played strong defense which kept the Flight grounded throughout the contest. Walker’s 27 rebounds also played a key role in the game.

Next Game: Jacksonville plays Fayetteville on Sunday to close out the weekend series. Jacksonville will play an offsite game on Wednesday evening December 12 at St.Joseph’s Academy in St. Augustine.

Giants Shut Down The Gym Rats in Dominant Win

Each season the Jacksonville Giants give back to their St. Augustine community by playing an offsite game in the “Nations Oldest City.” The Five time defending ABA National Champions did not disappoint,  energizing the local fan base in a 187-75 win over the visiting Shizuoka Gym Rats. Jacksonville showcased basketball skills that inspired the standing room only crowd at the  St. Joseph Academy gymnasium.

“Tonight started a little slow but once we settled in and played Giants basketball we were good,” said Giants head coach Jerry Williams.

The St. Augustine locals witnessed a lively professional basketball atmosphere. The Giants halftime show appealed to the crowd with multiple events. The Jewels and Gems dance teams performed high energy routines during the contest. Giants mascot Mr. Biggs ran around the gymnasium while signing autographs and taking pictures with young kids. Various in game activities, for young fans, also occurred. Overall, the defending ABA National Champions left a strong impression in all phases of the game.

“We got the tempo going good,” said Williams.

The Giants took an early lead on the Gym Rats and didn’t look back. Shooting Guard Bernard Nugent opened the first quarter scoring 10 points and added four rebounds. Reigning league MVP Maurice Mickens compiled six first quarter points, both on crowd pleasing three pointers. Mickens ended the game with 34 total points and also landed six total three pointers. The Internationally known Gym Rats were able to land a few late shots, before the closure of the first quarter, cutting the deficit to 28-18. Kodai Kawachi led Shizuoka with 19 points.

“We just want to stay the course,” said Mickens. “We just have to get prepared for March. I always say that March and April is when it counts.”

The turning point in the game for Jacksonville came in the second quarter when the Giants outscored the Gym Rats 56-14. The deficit overwhelmed the Japan-based team. The fast paced offensive tempo became too much for the Gym Rats.  On multiple occasions it wasn’t uncommon to see Giants players scoring wide open baskets. Mickens and Nugent continued the strong guard play. Jacksonville played tough on the boards out-rebounding Shizuoka 37-28 in first half.

The Giants continued to dominate in the second half, outscoring the Gym Rats 60-24 in the third quarter. Chris Brown converted two strong slam dunks with Mickens landing four three pointers. The fourth quarter remained the same with Jacksonville staying in cruise control. Calvin Warner (33 points) and Deangelo Stephens-Bell (23 points) rounded out the top scorers for Jacksonville.
