The reigning ABA National Champion Jacksonville Giants improved to 22-1 with a convincing, 116-87, win over the Glades Stampede. Jacksonville remains #2 in the latest ABA Power Rankings, but look to make a late season push back to #1.
“I’m really proud the way we came together and played as a team,” said Giants head coach Jerry Williams.
The Giants started the game in a tough position. Jacksonville trailed by 16 points midway through the second quarter. However, the reigning champs overcame adversity and leaned on the veteran play of Maurice Mickens. Mickens, the reigning ABA MVP gave Jacksonville a much needed spark which catapulted them to an eight point halftime lead. Overcoming the 16 point deficit was huge for Jacksonville.
“We are preparing for another championship,” said 2019 ABA Tournament MVP Bernard Nugent.
Jacksonville went on cruise control in the second half and kept the Stampede at bay. Mickens led the team with 29 points. Nugent (17 points), Miguel Paul (17 points), and Clarence Tillman (12 points) rounded out the top scorers for Jacksonville.
