Two-time ABA All Star and last season’s ABA Finals MVP, Jermaine “Slim” Bell, is the most dominant Center in the league. His presence on the court is impossible to ignore. Standing 7 feet tall, Slim’s height and athleticism is a winning combination for the GIANTS. Slim grew up in Rochester, NY, where, in his freshman year at Benjamin Franklin High School he was rated the number one high school player in the country. He went on to play basketball in Fitchburg, MA, at the Notre Dame Prep School, then at Indian Hills College in Iowa where he led the conference in blocked shots, ranked second in scoring and third in rebounding during his freshman year. Like many gifted athletes Slim turned pro early and began his career playing overseas with teams in Syria, Dubai and Qatar in the Middle East. In his final international game Slim recorded a game high 35 points! Jermaine first met Head Coach Kevin Waters in Boston at the 2010 Boston Pro-Am Basketball Classic, and Slim has been a Jacksonville GIANT ever since. “The Giants organization is by far the best group of staff and players that I’ve had the opportunity to work with,” says Slim. Coach Waters acknowledged that his 7-foot Center is an integral piece of the organization, and his experience as an athlete on and off the court distinguishes Jermaine as one of the team’s leaders. In his first season with the team, Slim stated that one of his goals was to “bring an ABA Championship to the City of Jacksonville.” Now, in his third season he says he just wants to defend the title and keep it in Jacksonville. Slim got his nickname early in grade school. He grins, “A rec player in Rochester named me that at 10 because I was already tall and slim, I guess. It’s a name that stuck with me ever since, and my teammates ran with it.” Slim’ s greatest inspirations in life are also his biggest fans: his three sons. As a father to Eric (7), Damarie (6) and Jermaine, Jr. (6 months), Slim plays every game for them. Whenever he finds himself with free time, Slim enjoys relaxing and hanging out with his girlfriend Lauren and their family. He ultimately wants to extend his professional career, but when it comes time to stop playing, Jermaine wants to continue sharing his love of the game as a coach.
